Find the right kids yoga mat with our buying guide covering size, grip, durability, and fun designs. Learn what to look for and which Liforme mats work best for children.
Quick answer
For most kids ages 6–12, a standard-size yoga mat (about 68–72 inches long) works well, but a longer XL mat can accommodate growing children or taller teens. Look for a mat with good grip, non-toxic materials, and a fun design that keeps them engaged. Liforme’s natural rubber mats offer excellent traction and durability, and several patterns appeal to younger practitioners.
Why size matters for a kids yoga mat
Children come in a wide range of heights, so a one-size-fits-all approach rarely works. A standard yoga mat (around 68–72 inches long) is usually fine for kids up to about 5 feet tall. For taller tweens or teens, an extra-long mat gives them room to stretch without hanging off the ends.
Liforme’s regular mats measure 72 inches long, which suits most children. If your child is over 5'4" or you want room to grow, the Liforme XL Mountain Yoga Mat adds 10 inches of length. Width also matters: a wider mat gives younger kids space to spread out during playful poses.
Grip and safety for little hands and feet
Kids move fast and often sweat less than adults, but they still need a mat that won’t slip during downward dog or cartwheels. Natural rubber topsheets provide excellent grip without synthetic stickiness. Liforme uses sustainably sourced natural rubber with a textured surface that grips even when dry.
Avoid mats with PVC or heavy chemical smells. Liforme mats are printed with eco-friendly, non-toxic inks and are PVC-free, so they’re safer for children who put their faces close to the mat. The AlignForMe® alignment system on many Liforme mats can also help kids learn proper hand and foot placement in a fun, visual way.
Fun designs that keep kids interested
A plain black mat might not excite a young yogi. Liforme offers several playful patterns that turn practice into an adventure. The Enchanted Forest Awakenings mat features colorful birds, bees, flowers, and forest creatures on an olive background — a design that invites imagination. The Dragon & Phoenix mat uses a striking gold alignment system on a red surface, adding a sense of magic and balance.
Letting your child choose a design they love can make them more eager to unroll the mat. The alignment markers on these mats double as a game: “Put your hands on the dragon’s wings” or “Step your foot to the flower.” This makes learning poses feel like play.
Durability for active use
Kids can be tough on gear. Mats get dragged, folded, jumped on, and occasionally spilled on. Liforme’s natural rubber construction holds up well to regular use and cleans easily with a damp cloth. The durable, non-toxic inks resist fading, so the fun design stays vibrant even after many sessions.
One trade-off: natural rubber mats are heavier than foam mats, so a younger child may need help carrying or rolling it up. If portability is a priority, consider a lighter mat for travel and keep the Liforme mat for home practice.
Quick decision rules for a kids yoga mat
- Size first: Measure your child’s height. If they are under 5'0", a standard 72-inch mat works. For taller kids or room to grow, choose an XL mat (82 inches). Check height before buying.
- Grip over thickness: Kids need a mat that stays put. Natural rubber offers superior grip without being too thick or unstable. Avoid slippery PVC mats. Rubber grips better than foam.
- Fun designs motivate practice: A mat with colorful patterns or alignment markers turns yoga into a game. Let your child pick a design they love to encourage regular use. Involve your child in the choice.
- Non-toxic materials are non-negotiable: Children breathe close to the mat and may put hands in their mouths. Choose PVC-free mats printed with eco-friendly, non-toxic inks. Safety first — avoid chemicals.
